A car drives 12 m/s [S] for 5.0 s, then 18 m/s [N] for 9.0 s, and finally 15 m/s [S] for 11 s. Calculate the distance and displacement of the vehicle

The total distance driven is = (12x5) + (18x9) + (15x11) = 387 m

If we consider each trip as a separate entity and plot the ending points on the y axis, we have:

(0, -60) + (0, 162) + (0, -165)  =  (0, -63)......so the final displacement is 63m S
