1)          When Isabel makes salad dressing, she likes to make it with 3 parts olive oil to 2 parts balsamic vinegar. If Isabel has 120 milliliters of olive oil (and a sufficient supply of balsamic vinegar), how many milliliters salad dressing can she make?

2)             There are 4 pecks in a bushel, and 64 pints in a bushel. How many pints are in a peck?

3)             There are 14 pounds in 1 stone. How many stone are in 147 pounds?

4)             At the Dessert Island Pastry Cafe, there are 2 cakes for every 7 donuts and 11 brownies for every 3 cakes. What is the ratio of brownies to donuts?

5)            Nathalie has some quarters, dimes, and nickels. The ratio of the number of quarters to the number of dimes to the number of nickels that she has is $9:3:1$. The total value of these coins is $18.20. How many coins does Nathalie have?

6)           I have a bag containing red, green, blue, and white marbles and the ratio red:green:blue:white is 2:2:5:7. I have 304 marbles. How many blue marbles do I have?

7)             In Psychology 101, the ratio of the number of girls to the number of boys is 3:1. After one girl drops the class and three more boys sign up, the ratio of the number of girls to the number of boys becomes 5:2. How many students are in the class after these changes?

1) Since the ratio is 3:2, it, therefore, follows that 120 ml of olive oil will require:

120 / (3/2) =120 x 2/3 =240/3 =80 ml of balsamic vinegar. So, the total salad dressing will be:

120 + 80 =200 ml.

2) According to your question, there are:

64/4 =16 pints in a peck!

3) 147/14 =10.5 stones in 147 pounds.

4)  I think the ratio stays the same as 11:7, since you can't have a fraction of a donut or a fraction of a Brownie!!

5) Will convert the ratios into dollars and cents:

9 x 0.25c =$2.25

3 x0.10 =0.30c

1 x .05 =0.05c

$2.25 + 0.30 + 0.05 = $2.60

$2.25/$2.6 x $18.20 =$15.75 in quarters

$15.75 /0.25 =63 quarters

0.30 / $2.6 x $18.20 =$2.10

$2.10/0.10 =21 dimes

.05 / $2.6 x $18.2=0.35c

0.35/0.05 =7 nickles.

63 quarters + 21 dimes + 7 nickles =91 coins

$15.75 + $2.10 + 0.35 =$18.20 in total.

6)  5/[2+2+5+7] x 304 =95  Blue marbles

7)  Let the number of girls =g

      Let the number of boys=b

g/b =3/1, and

[g - 1] / [b +3] =5/2, solve for b, g

g =51 girls, and

b=17 boys. This is the original ratio.

51 - 1 =50 girls

17 + 3 =20 boys. This is the ratio after the change.
