An equilateral triangle is modified so that the measure of each side is now 2 more than 3 times the original triangle. If the perimeter of the larger triangle is 42 , what is the length of the original side of the equilateral triangle ?

Here's another way to see this without doing much math.

If the perimeter is 42, each side is 14.  And this is 2 more than 3 times the original length.

So, subtracting 2 from a side = 12.

And this is 3 times the original length.......so the original length was 4.

If the original of each length is  x,

then the new length of each is:  3x + 2                  (two more than three times the original)

Perimeter of new triangle:  (3x + 2) + (3x + 2) + (3x + 2)  =  42

--->     9x + 6  =  42

--->     9x  =  36

--->       x  =  4
