For the following two numbers, find two factors of the first number such that their product is the first number and their sum is the second

14 and 4 should do the trick  !!!!

14 * 4  =  56

14 + 4   =   18

Mathematically, we have

xy  = 56  →   y  = 56/x     (1)

And   x + y  =  18        (2)

Sub (1)  into (2)   and we have

x  +   56/x  =  18         multiply through by x

x^2  + 56   =   18x       subtract 18x from both sides

x^2  -  18x  +  56   = 0   factor

(x  - 14)  (x - 4)   = 0

Set both factors to 0 and solve for x and we have that  x = 14   and x  = 4

So either.......y  = 56/x  =  56/14   =  4      or  y  = 56/4  =  14

So......14 and 4 are the factors
