I draw a $7 \times 11$ rectangle, and then another rectangle outside the first rectangle, so that the corresponding sides of the rectangles are parallel, and the distances between the corresponding sides is 1. Find the area of the border between the two rectangles.

The new rectangle will have the dimensions  of (7 + 2) x (11 + 2)  =  9 x 13

So....the area between them is just

( 9 * 13) - (11 * 7 )  =

117 - 77 =

40 units^2
