how is 10*cosine 30=.866? I thought cosine 30= 1/2

I don't memorise those ratios.  I have 'memorised' this triangle.

It is an equilateral triangle of side length 2 that has been split down the middle.

You can 'see' that cos 30 = sqrt3/2

No...the sine of 30 (degrees) = 1/2  !!!

10*cos(30) = about 8.66
