10 people ordered dinner and the meal is paid per person (x). 2 people cancelled. the left over people paid an extra $3. What was the original price per person?

you could just say that $3*8 = $24 = the two cancelled people so... each person was $12
I assume the $3 extra per person is meant to make the total amount paid the same as before.
10 * Original cost = x
(8 * Original cost) + (8 * $3) = x
thus: 10 * original cost = (8 * Original cost) + (8 * $3)
2 * Original cost = 8 * $3 = $24
Hence Original cost = $12
+10
