$$\\4x^2-12x=9\\
4x^2-12x-9=0\\
$you need two numbers that multiply to $4*-9=-36\\
$and add to $-12\\
$I don't think there is an integer answer so you will need to use the quadratic formula.$$$

or you couold use completingthe squares method.

$$\\x^2-3x=9/4\\
x^2-3x+(3/2)^2=9/4+(3/2)^2\\
(x-1.5)^2=18/4\\
x-1.5=\pm\sqrt{(2*9/4}\\
x-1.5=\pm1.5\sqrt{2}\\
x-1.5\approx \pm3.18198\\
$You appear to be after a distance so the neg answer is irrelevant$\\
x\approx 1.5+3.18198\\
x\approx 4.68$$
