If f(x)  = 10....we have that

x^2  +  9  =  10       subtract  10 from both sides

x^2  -1  = 0       factor

(x + 1) (x - 1)  = 0      set each  factor to 0 and solve for x and we get that

x  = 1   or   x  = -1

But only the second answer is in the domain

Also

3x  -  8  =  10   subtract  10 from both sides

3x  - 18  = 0     factor

3(x  - 6)  = 0       divide both sides by 3

 x - 6  = 0       add 6 to both sides

x  = 6       and this is in the domain

So....possible  values of x are   -1   and   6

Sorry, but that would make the sum 5 and 5 isn't right... Am I missing something?

Sorry, ACG....only x =   6 is correct.....x  = -1 as an answer to the first one isn't in the domain, either....
