An ostrich egg has about the same volume as a sphere with a diameter of 5 inches. If the shell is about 1/12 inch thick, find the volume of just the shell, not including the interior of the egg. Round your answer to the nearest tenth.

The volume of the shell will equal the volume of the egg including the shell less the volume of the interior....so we have

(4/3)pi (5 + 1/12)^3  - (4/3)pi(5)^3  =

(4/3)pi  [ (5 + 1/12)^3 - (5)^3 ] ≈ 26.6 in^3
