Let the cost of the skirt = S, then we have:

100% profit on the gloves=2 x 3=6 pounds

40% profit on the total cost =1.4[S+3], But we have:

1.4[S+3] = 42, solve for S:

1.4S + 4.2 = 42

1.4S = 42 - 4.2

1.4S =37.8

S = 37.8 / 1.4

S = 27 pounds - cost of the skirt.So that:

27 + 3 =30 x 1.4 =42 total sale

42 - 6 =36 pounds - sale of skirt + profit margin on it.
