A plumber has a very long piece of pipe that is used to run city water parallel to a major roadway. The pipe is cut into two sections. One section of the pipe is 12 ft. shorter than the other. If 3/4 of the length of the shorter pipe is 120 ft., how long is the longer piece of the pipe?

Let x be the longer piece

So  x - 12  is the shorter piece

So we have

(3/4)(x - 12)  = 120  multiply both sides by 4/3

x - 12  = 120 (4/3)

x - 12  = 160       add 12 to both sides

x = 172 ft  =  the longer piece

cool cool cool
