If you have an equilateral octagon with a semi-circle on two sides and each sides length is 8 inches long how do you find the area of the shape as a whole?

Area  of the octagon  =   2 ( 1 + sqrt (2) ) * side^2.....so we have

2 (1 + sqrt (2) ) (8)^2  =

128 (1 + sqrt(2) )  ≈  309  sq in

The two semi-circles will have the same total area as a circle with a radius of 4 in....so their total area  =  pi * radius^2   =  pi * (4)^2  =   16pi sq in

So....the total area ≈  ( 309 + 16pi) sq in  ≈ 359.3 sq in

cool cool cool
