If you have an equation in this form:

$$ax^2+bx+c=0$$

, and then solve that equation for  x , you will get

$$x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}$$

, which is the quadratic formula.

This might help explain it better:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7idZfS8t8w

Beautifully succinct :)

If interested, a friend of mine just posted a video showing the derivation fo the quadratic formula: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhbcRv5L-lI
