Samuel has a collection of nickels and quarters. If he has eight less quarters than nickels, and he has sixteen coins in total, find how many money he has!
He has 8 less quarters than nickles.
q = n - 8
He has 16 coins in total.
q + n = 16
Replace q with n - 8 in the second equation.
(n - 8) + n = 16
n - 8 + n = 16
2n = 16 + 8
n = 24/2 = 12
Replace n with 12 in the first equation.
q = 12 - 8 = 4
He has 4 quarters and 12 nickles.
That is 4($0.25) + 12($0.05) = $1.60 :)
