The length of a rectangle is twice as long as its width. The perimeter is 72 feet. What is the length and width?

Let x ft be its width.

x + 2x = 72

3x = 72

x = 24

Therefore length = 2 x 24 = 48ft and width = 24ft

perimeter of a rectangle = length + length + width + width

72 = 2w + 2w + w + w

72 = 6w

12 = w

 

width = 12 feet

length = 2 * w = 24 feet
