We want to know what  x  values make   2x2 - 4x - 6   equal to   0

2x2 - 4x - 6  =  0         Divide through by  2  .

x2 - 2x - 3  =  0           What two numbers add to  -2  and multiply to  -3  ? →   +1   and   -3

                                   So...we can factor it like this...

(x + 1)(x - 3)  =  0        Set each factor equal to zero and solve for x.

x + 1  =  0          and          x - 3  =  0

x  =  -1               and          x  =  3
