A faction is one of the ways to represent  a ratio. The fraction 1/2 should be read as "one for every two"or "one out of two". The line (/)between the numbers is read as"for every" or "out of"expressing the relationship between the two numbers. This relationship will be consistent and the same even as the numbers change. 2/4 would be the same Ratio a 1/2.

You can use the Ratios as Numbers (quantities) adding them subtracting them and doing all of the other math operations with them.
