If the two points are (x1, y1) and (x1, y2), the slope of the straight line that passes through those two points is:  m  =  (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

If (x1, y1) = (-1, -1) and (x2, y2) = (2, 8), then

     m  =  (8 - -1) / (2 - -1)  =  9/3  =  3
