I think they want to know this :

[ 1 + 1/2 ] / [3 / 16] =

[3/2] / [ 3/16] invert the second fraction and multiply

[ 3/2] * [ 16/ 3] swap denominators

[3 / 3 ] * [ 16 / 2 ] =

1 * 8 =
