If s is a real number, then what is the smallest possible value of 2s^2 - 8s + 19 + s - s^2 - 14s?

Simplify as

s^2 - 21s + 19

We have the form  a^2 + bx + c

The value that minimzes this  is   s =  -b/ (2a) =   (-)(-21) / (2*1)  =  21 /2

The minimum value  is   (21/2)^2 -21(21/2) + 19  = -365 / 4
