The diagonal of the square must be  <  9  cm  for the square to fit

 

The diagonal is given  by

 

diagonal  =     sqrt  ( side^2  + side^2)    = sqrt  [ 5^2 + 5^2 ] = sqrt  [ 50]  ≈  7.07  cm

 

So..the square will fit inside the circle
