Let r be the number of red pens, and g be the number of green pens.

We get the relations:

g + 3 = r

\(\dfrac{g(g - 1) + r(r - 1)}{(g + r)(g + r - 1)} = \dfrac{17}{35}\)

After substituting the first equation into the second equation and simplifying, we get \((g - 6)(g - 9) = 0\).

The rest is trivial.
