3x-6y=-12

x-2y=-8

Use the substitution method to justify that the given system of equations has no solution.

What do you know about the two lines in this system of equations?

3x-6y=-12

x-2y=-8

factor a 3 out of the first equation                              3 • (X – 2Y)  =  –12

divide both sides by 3                                                       X – 2Y   =   –4

but the second equation says                                           X – 2Y   =   –8

therefore the two equations are incompatible
