It would like the probability as a fraction out of 60. Please can someone help me?

The total number of paintings is given by:  x(x-2) + x + 2x + 8 + 10 = 60  or, simplifying, x2 +x - 42 = 0 

 This can be factored as (x+7)(x-6) = 0, so the only positive solution is x = 6.

 

However, since you are given the fact that x is from the 20th century the probability it is British is x/[x(x-2)] = 1/(x-2) = 1/4
