(a)   Write an equation to represent this situation.

(b)   Solve the equation. How many consecutive free throws would she have to make to raise her percent to 85%?

2.     Simplify the expression x^2+3x-28/x^2 -7x+12

$$\text{suppose she has to make }n \text{ consecutive throws}\\ \dfrac{12+n}{15+n} = 0.85 \\ 12+n = 12.75 + 0.85n\\ 0.15n =0.75 \\ n=5$$

1)

$$\dfrac{5}{\frac 1 6 + \frac{1}{x+1}} =\\ \dfrac{5}{\frac{x+1+6}{6(x+1)}} =\\ \dfrac{5\cdot 6(x+1)}{x+7} = \\ \dfrac{30(x+1)}{x+7}$$

Here's the second one :

x^2 + 3x  - 28

____________          factor  top/bottom

x^2 -7x + 12

( x + 7) ( x - 4)

____________        "cancel"  the  ( x - 4)  factor  on top/bottom

(x - 3)  (x - 4)

( x + 7)

_______         ( with  x not equal to 4)

( x  - 3)
