4(A-120) = A+120

Solve for A (THE original AMOUNT)  then subtract the 120 ml that was transferred.

Let  the original amount in both containers  = A

 

After  120 ml   is poured into B  we have that

 

4 ( A  - 120)   = A  +  120       simplify

 

4A  - 480  =  A  +  120      add 480 to  both sides,  subtract  A  from both sides

 

3A  =  600    divide  both sides  by  3

 

A =  200

 

The amount left in A =  A  - 120    =  200   - 120   =    80 ml
