x+y=1.1

y is a dollar more than x.

(If you didn't know, y is the bat, x is the ball)

y=x+1

x+y=1.1

Substitute x+1 for y.

x+(x+1)=1.1

2x+1=1.1

Subtract 1 from both sides.

2x=.1

Divide by 2 on both sides.

x=.05

Now, substitute .05 for x in y=x+1.

y=.05+1

y=1.05

Answer: The ball is $.05 and the bat is $1.05.
