A grain barge travels on a river from point A to point B loading and unloading grain. The barge travels at a rate of 8 mph relative to the water. The river flows downstream at a rate of 1mph. If the trip upstream takes 6 hours longer than the trip downstream, how far is it from point A to point B?

How many miles from A to B?

Average speed =Distance/ time

8+1=d/t travelling with the current

8-1 =d/t+6 travelling against the current

9t =7(t+6)

9t=7t+42

2t=42

t=21 hours travelling with the current

Distance =21 x 9mph=189 miles-the distance between A and B.
