I know the solution, I just don't understand the process of getting it.

Heres what I did:

-5+1*3-(7-2^3)

-5+1*3-(7-8)

-5+1*3-(-1)

-5+3-(-1)

-2-(1)

-3

Seems like you don't know what's a-(-b)

\(\boxed{a-(-b)=a+b}\)

-5+3-(-1) <---- until here you are still correct.

= -5 + 3 + 1

= 4 - 5

= -1

order of opperations is PEMDAS
-5+1 * 3 -(7-2^3)
First tackle the exponent in the Parenthesis ( makes life easier)
-5 + 1 * 3 -(7-8)
Next would be to continue with the distributive law, I like to put a 1 infront of the - sign like so:
-5 + 1 * 3 -1(7-8)
After distributing everything you should have this
-5 + 1 * 3 -7 + 8
Now you need to follow the order of PE"M"DAS, we need to multiply the 1*3 and when we do we get 3.
-5 + 3 - 7 +8
So let's now group the negatives on one side and the positives on another side to make it easier to read.
+ 3 +8 -5 - 7
okay so lets solve the positive numbers and then the negatives
+11 - 12
what's -12 + 11?
-1
