A rectangle has an area of 180 square feet.  The length is three feet longer than the width. What are the length and width of the rectangle?

Area  = L * W     and L = W + 3   .....so we  have

 

180  = (W + 3) (W)   simplify

 

180  = W^2  + 3W       rearrange

 

W^2 + 3W - 180  = 0     factor

 

(W + 15) (W - 12)  = 0           only the second factor set to 0 will yield a positive solution for W......and W  = 12 ft in this case........and since the length is three feet more, L  = 15 feet
