A rectangle has an area of 180 square feet. The length is three feet longer than the width. What are the length and width of the rectangle?
Area = L * W and L = W + 3 .....so we have
180 = (W + 3) (W) simplify
180 = W^2 + 3W rearrange
W^2 + 3W - 180 = 0 factor
(W + 15) (W - 12) = 0 only the second factor set to 0 will yield a positive solution for W......and W = 12 ft in this case........and since the length is three feet more, L = 15 feet
