Almonds sell for $4.50 per pound and green beans for $3.75 per pound. Paul bought some almonds and some green beans. The total weight was 3.5 pounds and the total cost was $9.75. How many green beans and almonds did Paul buy?
Let x be the lbs. of almonds bought and y be the lbs. of green beans bought......
We have the folowing system
x + y = 3.5 (1)
4.50x + 3.75y = 9.75 (2)
Look at the intersection of the graphs of both equations.....https://www.desmos.com/calculator/bqli1rebwu
The solution is that -4.5 lbs. of almonds were bought and that 8 lbs. of green beans were bought......this obviously isn't a realistic solution since we can't purchase a "negative" weight of something......
