Three friends are driving to New York City and splitting the gas cost equally. At the last minute, 2 more friends joined the trip. The cost of gas was then evenly redistributed among all of the friends. The cost for each of the original 3 decreased by 11.00. What was the total cost of the gas, in dollars?

Let 'x' = original cost to EACH of the three for gas....

then   3x = total gas cost

then two more join and the EACH COST goes down 11.00

so  x-11 is the new EACH COST

there are now 5 of them

5(x-11) = total cost = 3x

5(x-11) = 3x

5x - 55 = 3x

2x = 55

x = 27.50    original cost of gas for 3    total cost = 3 (27.50) = 82.50

WHen there are 5 the EACH COST is  82.50/5 =  16.50      which IS 11.00 than the original cost each.

Total cost = d

Original cost per person = d/3

New cost per person = d/5

d/5 = d/3 - 11

11 = d/3 - d/5

11 = 2d/15

11*15/2 = d

d = 82.5 dollars
