Suppose that youn tied a rope firmly around the Earth's equator. (The diameter of the earth at the equator is 7,926.41 miles) Now, suppose that this rope was lengthened by 10 feet, and supported so that it was the same height above the surface of the Earth all the way around. How high would it be?

Pi x Diameter of Earth = original length

pi x 7,926.41mi x 5280 ft/mile = 131480191.5  ft

add ten feet  = 131480201.5 ft

NEW diameter x pi = 131480201.5

NEW diameter = 41851447.98 ft

(NEW diameter - original diameter  ) / 2  = height     =   1.5916 ft
