Do I substitute here?

I wouldn't substitute.

If you started with -2(x + 1) ^ (1/2) and differentiated that expression,

you would have:  (1/2)(-2)(x + 1) ^ (-1/2)·1  =  -1(x + 1)^(-1/2).

Just do an antiderivative of a polynomial-type expression to get -2(x + 1) ^ (1/2).
