Mary worked for 6 hours. Alison for 2 hours. They got paid £40. How much should mary get paid?

Good work anonymous - It is correct.

 

I'd just like to show you an easier way.

6+2=8 hours altogether

40 divided by 8 = 5 pounds per hour.

Mary worked for 6 hours so she will get paid 6*5 = 30pounds

let mary got paid £x for 6 hours & alison got paid £y for 2 hours.

For 1 hour marry got £x/6 & alsion got £y/2.

since the wages for 1 hour are same for both of them.

therefore, x/6=y/2 i.e x=3y

it is also given that x+y=40....(i)

3y+y=40  (b'coz x=3y)

4y=40

y=10

from eqn. (i) we get 

x=30

hence, alison got paid £10.

P.S: can't say it's right but i think it is right.
