the groundskeeper watered 1- 5th of the plants in the morning and 3- 10ths of plants in the evening? what fraction of the plants have been watered

First, you would need to make the denominators equal by finding the LCD (least common denominator).  Since 10 is the lowest multiple that the denominators have in common, that would be the new denominator. 5*2 is 10 and 10*1 is 10. Since you multiplied the 5 by 2, you would need to the same for the numerator, 1. 1*2 is 2, and the new fraction would be 2/10. 2/10 plus 3/10 is 5/10, simplified to 1/2. That means that the groundskeeper watered half of the plants.

OK

1/5 + 3/10       getting a common denominator, we have

2/10 + 3/10   = 5/10   = 1/2

So 1/2 of the plants have been watered.
