A purple rectangular wood block measures 5.0 cm long, 5.00 cm wide, 2.00 cm high. The block floats in water with the bottom face 1.55 cm below the surface. What is the density of the block? The density of water is 1.00 g/cm3.

A.0.350 g/cm3

B.0.606 g/cm3

C.0.65 g/cm3

D.0.775 g/cm3

E.1.21 g/cm3

First, figure out the volume of the wooden block before immersing it in water:

V=5 x 5 x 2=50 cubic cm.

Second, figure out the volume of the block that is under the water surface:

V=5 x 5 x 1.55=38.75 cubic cm=volume of displaced water=mass of displaced water.

Density=Mass/Volume

D=38.75/50 =.775g/cm^3. And so, I would say "D"

Alan: Please verify this. Thanks.
