Several logs are stored in a pile with 22 logs on the bottom layer, 21 on the second layer, 20 on the third layer, and so on. If the top layer has one log, how many logs are in the pile?
a. 242
b. 253
c. 231
d. 252
e. none of the above
The total is represented by the sum of the first 22 positive integers......the general form is given by:
(n)(n + 1)/ 2 .....in this case n = 22 .....so we have.....
(22)(23) / 2 = 253 logs
There are calculators that will do this for you:
\(\sum_{1}^{22} x\) = 253
Basically it does this: 1 + 2 +3 + 4.....+ 22
