Solve for x.  Please show all real and non-real answers and show how you got to your answer.

Add 16.23412 to both sides of the equation to get:

 

x2 + 4x + 8 = 0

 

This doesn't factorize nicely, so use the quadratic formula:

 

x+ = (-4 + sqrt(42 - 4*1*8))/(2*1)  → (-4 + sqrt(-16))/2  → (-4 + 4i)/2 →  -2 + 2i

 

Similarly,  x- = -2 - 2i

 

So there are two complex (non-real) roots.
