how do i solve this problem using substitution? y=x+1, -2x-y=7

The FIRST equation says y = (x+1)     substitute this value into equation 2   

-2x - y = 7

-2x - (x+1) = 7

-2x -x -1 = 7

-3x = 8

x =- 8/3

 

Then since y= x+1

                     = -8/3 + 1

                     = -5/3      = y
