Well, it really depends on how complex you want to get.

 

I would suggest taking a look at this "Math is Fun" page about that subject.

 

In it's basic form, N to the power of M means multiply N times itself M times.

 

So 3 to the power of 2 would be

3 times itself 2 times,

or 3 times 3 equals 9.
