if a 225 pound box is resting on a sloping ramp, two forces are "at work" on the box as a result of its weight. one is the force f2 perpendicular to the ramp and the other, a friction force f1, is parallel to the ramp. find the sizes of these two forces if the ramp slopes at an angle of 15 degrees.

Force perpindicular is found by the cosin of 15 degrees

cos15   = adjacent/hypotenuse   = adj/225    Where adj is the perpindicular force (f2)

225 cos 15 = adj = 217.333 = f2

You can use pythagorean theorem to find the friction force or use the sin function....let's use the sin function to find the answer and check it with the Pythag th.

sin 15 = opposite/hypotenuse = opp/225

225 sin 15 = opposite       where opposite is the force of friction (f1) being exerted to keep the box from sliding.

f1 = 58.234 

 

Use Pythagorean Theorem to check:    58.234^2 + 217.333^2 = 225^2        ????      Yep !
