a river runs directly east at 1.28 miles hour. if a swimmer can swim at the rate of 1.75 miles hour in still water and he starts swimming north directly accross the river, in what direction is he actually moving? where does he hit the opposite bank if the river is one mile wide?

His drift angle is given by :

 

arctan [  1.28 /  1.75]  = about  36.18°

 

We can use similar triangles to answer the second part

 

x / 1  = 1.28/1.75   where x is the disrance downstream from where he started

 

x = 1.28/1.75 =  about 0.73 miles
