Two jets leave denver at 9:00 A.M., one flying east at a speed 50kn/h greater than the other, which is traveling west. At 11:00 A.M. the planes are 2500 km apart. find their speeds

Both planes have traveled for 2 hours at 11 AM.......let the speed of one plane = x......let the speed of the other be x + 50

And we have........Time * Rate = Total Distance

2x + 2(x + 50) = 2500 simplify

4x + 100 = 2500 subtract 100 from both sides

4x = 2400 divide both sides by 4

x = 600 km/hr this is the speed of the slower plane

x + 50 = 650 km/hr this is the speed of the faster plane
