What is a unit rate?

In your case, what is most important for you to understand is this: If you went into a store and bought 5 sticks of gum for $3.00, what is the unit rate in dollars and cents per 1 stick of gum?

So you have to divide $3.00/5=.60 cents, which the cost of one stick of gum, or the "unit rate" in this case.
