First find the mean:  (38 + 38 + 38 + 39 + 42)/5 = 39

 

Now add up the absolute values of the deviations from the mean and divide by 5:

 

MAD = (|38-39| + |38-39| + |38-39| + |39-39| + |42-39|)/5 = (1 + 1 + 1 + 0 + 3)/5 = 6/5 = 1.2
