Is there a formula I can use to find how many solutions an equation of the form ax +b = m*cos(kx) will have, a, b, m and k being constants?

Prime number property
(a^(n)b - ab^(n))/(2n)
When a and b are integers, and when the result is an integer too, i predict n is a prime number.
How can I prove it?
