how does log work

can you explain to me how log works? please, and thank you.

i found the answer, i hate asking people for stuff. but for others who are also seeing the answer to this question, log is the number that another number is raised too to get a sertain amount. for example log(1325) is 3.122 (rounded). this is useing the standered form 10 for the log function, this meaning that 10 raised to the 3.122 will equal aproximatly 1325. another example would be log3 (1000) what you are trying to find here is 3 raised to what power will equal 1000 which of course is 6.287709822868.
