It is an acronym for memorizing the Order of Operations:
P- Parentheses first
E- Exponents (powers and square roots)
MD - Multiplication and Division (left-to-right)
AS- Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

three plus negative two
Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting a positive number, so
3+ (-2) is the same as 3 - 2
Which is 1.

A picture 4 in. tall and 9 in. wide is to be scaled to 2.5 in tall. How wide should the smaller picture be for two pictures to be similar
You can set up a proportion for this problem:
4 over 9 = 2.5 over x.
Since the two sides are equal, you can cross-multiply.
So 4*x = 9*2.5
Simplify.
4x = 22.5
divide both sides by 4 to find x, which is the width of the smaller picture.
To check your answer, the ratio of height to width should be the same for both pictures.
So 4 divided by 9 should equal 2.5 divided by your answer:)

Hi Emily,
The square root of 100 is whatever number multiplied by itself that equals 100.
So it is 10, because 10 x 10 = 100.
You may want to memorize the square roots of numbers from 1 squared to 12 squared, to make future square root problems more convenient:)

Hi Hayden,
So I'm obviously not Melody, but I'll try to explain it:
Melody wrote:
4B+5C=36
C=4B
Replace the C in the first equation with 4B and then solve
So basically, she's explaining that the reason the C (cakes) can be replaced by 4B (buns) is b/c the problem states that each cake cost 4 times as much as a bun.
If you replace the C with 4B, you would get this equation:
4B + 5(4B) = 36
Multiply it out:
4B + 20B = 36
Add it:
24B = 36
Now divide both sides by 24 to get the price for one bun:)
